Even IF #Apple gets its butt in gear about #FCPX shortcoming... I wonder if it's already too late. I feel like they had their chance and blew it for a lot of folks. It hard to have faith in a company that promises they'll do it right, then mostly underwhelms.
Yes, they got lots of stuff right... But so much wrong. I'll be sticking it out... Holding on... But for how long, I don't know.

Crude Beginnings to Learning Nuke 6

Nuke absolutely boggles me. So this is just for me to see that I'm making progress. Today I read about half the manual. And with a lot of trial and error, I figured out how to do a very basic split frame. So really nothing new here, just proof that I'm trudging through Nuke right now.

Obviously, plenty that could have been done better. This is more just to show myself I CAN actually begin learning Nuke.

Panasonic GH1 Exposure bracketing to HDR

So I tried out the Exposure Bracketing option on the GH1 today. I did a quick photo merge to test it out. It's interesting to see the level of detail you can get in the shadows this way (if you excuse the macro blocking from web compression).

Panasonic GH1 Sensor Test

To test the "cleanliness" of an ISO on the sensor, I capped the lens and shot a frame for each ISO setting available on the camera. The GH1 has ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, & 3200 available.

ISO 100 appears to be the cleanest by far (in contrast to my Nikon D40 results), with ISO 200 doubling the noise on the sensor taken with an all black image.

Note how the file sizes increase with the ISO. All the pictures are simply shot with the lens cap on.

A weird pattern emerges. The grain appears to Sweep across the frame from left to right. The only thing I can assume is that is how the sensor reads (left to right). So the left side of the sensor is exposed fractionally longer than the right. Also, in lower ISO's a solid line is clearly visible. I'm not sure if this is a defect in my sensor or present is most GH1's.

Canon Rebel T2i Sensor Test

I was listening to the RC (previously [and belovedly] know as the Red Centre) last night, and they went into greater detail about testing a digital sensor for it's native ISO. That got me wondering. So using the described method, I tested a Rebel T2i that a friend had and the results were indeed surprising.

To test your sensor, cap the lens (or better, use the body cap) and fire off an all black shot at your lowest ISO. Repeat sequentially for all ISO's up through the range.

Next, look at your file sizes? See how the higher your ISO the larger the file size? Weird huh? "But it's all black?!"

Finally, I threw the pictures into Aperture and massaged the Histogram till I had each image spread across the whole field. Take a look:
(Because of the method I used to spread the color information across the histogram, what you loose is the progressive "fogging" of the images. They slowly get lighter as you go up the ISO)

Enterprise Apple (OR: Don't Blow It)

Ok, here's the deal, I'm an Apple convert. Borderline fanboi.
They do an incredible job at giving consumers an simplistic, intuitive, yet extremely robust user experience. The problem is, as they do this, people want more. And more happens to coincide with the workplace. It used to be that Apple owned the graphics domain, but nowadays they are slipping heavily given that the performance gains of picking a Mac over a Windows or Linux distro are quite relative at this point.

With the increased love for the Mac Experience at the "common" level, people wan't that same experience at work. The problem is, Apple does not provide a truly viable way of doing this. Yes, you can NetBoot an image of OSX, but you still incur the costs of an entire Client Machine. At $1200 for the cheapest iMac, it starts to look a little impractical. Yes, you could do a Mini, but the costs for that add up quickly too. Apple is very tight-lipped about their future directions, so they could already be making moves for a solution to Apple in the Enterprise (at least I hope so).

This is what I imagine, Apple allows OS X (much like they do [sort of] for OS X Server) to be virtualized on a licensed server (non-apple since they axed the XServe). Something like VMWare Vision or ACE. And you plug a Screen, Apple Keyboard and Mouse into something like the Apple TV. That Apple TV serves as a Thin Client or Dumb Terminal that does nothing but display the output of the desktop environment that is being processed on the server array.

They key is to allow virtualization only in certain environments, you still shouldn't be able to install OS X on non-apple clients, but allow a special case where it can be installed in approved server Desktop Virtualization environments. This would drastically drive the cost of ownership for apple products down in the enterprise. Even if they made a $600 dumb terminal iMac, that would be great. And then also allow their laptops to work as Thin Clients that can checkout the desktop environment to allow users to take work home or off the grid.

To there is my mini rant and proposed solution. Apple, please, please, don't sit on your laurels for enterprise environments.

Completely ignore all the marketing hype, it's overdone.
With that out of the way, Jolie is enchanting and "ravishing". Depp plays a normal person with an ease that transcends acting.
It's a simple but highly effective fairytale story of ultimate love, throw in a twist of action and espionage, and you have a delightful film that appeals to both sexes.

I'm not sure what the limitations after trial period are, but for 30 days, http://Gliffy.com is an awesome Visio style web tool that's really helping me visualize my small business network. It will let you graphically layout any number of things from Networks, to mind-maps and program models.

It comes with a fairly comprehensive grouping of categorized images for placing on your page. Customization is easy, versions are saved automatically, and the magnetic lines really do a great job of following your items and figuring out placement. At $5 per user past trial, if you do this sort of thing often, but not ALL the time, it just may be worth it.

I'm proposing a a networking over haul for our base of operations here in Salem, Oregon. I have rudimentary Networking knowledge and I've proposed the following design for our network. however, there are a few questions I have.

Networking Structure

We desire to launch a base-wide network with OS-X server to perform the following tasks:

• Managed Traffic Load

• Multi-LAN/WLAN multiple DSL lines

• Prioritized traffic groups (server or router?)

• Throttled guests (server or router?)

• Asset Sharing

• Contacts

• Files

• Render Nodes (Final Cut)

• DHCP Assignment

• Subnets for Departments or Buildings (server or router?)

• Room for static IP’s

• User groups

• Managed asset access

• Accountability Online per user

• Program access

• Custom desktops

• Time Machine Backups

• Individual node backup over server

• Wireless Access Points / Extenders

• Managed by server group?

• Guest WiFi

• Staff Wifi/LAN

Managed Traffic Load

We propose a balanced multi WAN router (Peplink 310 or 30) to receive input from 3 Qwest DSL lines for approximately 36Mbs throughput to the internet. The Peplink models can manage user groups and throttle accordingly but it is unsure if this can be done through the server better. Or can the server and router share user-groups to avoid multiple logins?

Asset Sharing

Files and contacts will be shared through access to the server. It is desirable to make the server files structure the default for saved files.

Render Nodes

The server and Intel OS-X Client Nodes should be accessible and configured for Final Cut render sharing through Compressor from the Communications Office.

DHCP Assignment

The Peplink router will have the IP address: 192.168.0.1 (gateway 255.255.255.0) and Assign IP’s in a range from *.*.*.20-254 to allow for static IP’s between the range of *.*.*.2-19

Again, unsure if IP assignment can be done better through the server. Can the main router (or server) manage subnets for departments as well? Should the server act as an interim to between the network and the gateway, or should the server be an offshoot of the network?

Subnets should be for departments over LAN and WLAN (as seen on Networking Map) and double as Guest AP’s / Extenders.

• ToDo: Map Channel Optimization for WLAN AP’s

User Groups

It is desirable to have custom fetched desktops, program access, and shared asset access based on user-group assignment. Also, tracking and reporting of NSFW web activity.

Time Machine Backups

A 4TB FAT32 server attached RAID 5 drive for OS-X and Windows system backup. Scheduled and managed by the server for individual nodes.

Wireless Access Points / Extenders

Dedicated AP’s in bridged extender mode can be placed in weak zones to extend range of Subnet Routers. Access and bandwidth are hoped to be controlled by user-group. Sys-Admins and staff have access to internal network. Guests have access to certain printers, and the internet with global and per user throttling.
